If Hong Kong Can Do It, Why Can’t Boston?

If Hong Kong Can Do It, Why Can’t Boston?

re: The Green Patrol

Dear City of Boston,

Boston is always referenced as a world class city, and I am proud of that label and of Boston and New England. What I'm not proud of, however, is the litter - and the people and businesses that perpetrate this act of defiance against the rest of society. What hurts the most is the thought of our tourist industry potentially suffering, and seeing tourists walking through trash on the streets, wondering why they came to this so-called world class place.

I realize this lowly act of littering our own streets and neighborhoods starts in the home with the lack of teaching respect and discipline, but that’s another story. I see kids and adults alike either not caring or noticing (which is even more disturbing) when they just drop something on the street or out of a car. It always amazes me that a person just cannot wait until they reach a trash receptacle. It’s as if throwing litter on the ground is second nature to them. I see certain businesses not caring about the sidewalk in front of their establishments and their constant weekly trash violations.

This has to stop and it may be easier than one may think.

I propose The Green Patrol, an arm of the City of Boston’s DPW, which patrols the streets (by foot, bicycles, Segway, etc) and fines people for blatant littering and violations. They can be equipped with digital cameras for documentation of evidence, and also walkie-talkies linked directly to the police department in times of trouble. There can be warnings signs placed in strategic locations on the outskirts of the city, and within city limits warning people of the consequences with regard to littering. This can also be done with a mass internet posting and media avenues.

The Green Patrol can either issue a notice to appear in court, or hand out tickets immediately. If The Green Patrol enforces the law and hands out tickets continually to guilty businesses and individuals--in other words, if one is hit in the pocketbook--then the negative process can be reversed and positive actions may occur. If underage children or teens litter, parents can be fined for their kid’s actions, and, if a parent is getting fined, then this may incur a call for disciplinary lessons at home.

The Green Patrol can put hundreds of people to work, and also create a court specifically for this new ordinance, so as to not overload the current court system. The fines can bring more revenue to the city for programs, new trash facilities, and to implement new receptacle* concepts. The city still uses regular trash cans/baskets with trash bags in some places which overload, and when the wind blows, the trash is whirled right out of the basket like a tornado all over the street. This plan should be replaced immediately.

There is no question that we will all benefit from this as a city, and as Bostonians. It only makes sense that a cleaner city is a healthier place, and this in turn will bring more business and tourists. Prime examples we should all take lessons from (only a couple of examples) are the North End and parts of the South End and certain areas of South Boston…residents take responsibility and maintain care of their own street fronts, gardens, walkways, and store fronts.

It doesn’t take much effort to be courteous and grab a broom and keep your area clean, respectable and presentable. It takes little effort to wait until you reach a trash can or keep garbage in your car until you can get rid of it in a proper place. Let’s all do the right thing, and start proving to ourselves and the world that Boston is truly a World Class City.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Leo Anthony

* An idea: Street-side mini compactors or a less expensive idea: create a three to four foot cemented hole, and cover it with a standard height no-touch receptacle with hinges on the bottom of one side and a lock on the opposite side. When unlocked by the DPW, it folds down to the side and exposes the plastic container liner for an easy emptying process. The plastic liner’s contents can be easily emptied into a truck, or the container replaced with an empty one.

Interview with Stephanie Tzu-Han Chang of AWSHIP

Interview with Stephanie Tzu-Han Chang of AWSHIP

AWSHIP (Asian Women’s Health Initiative Project), is a five-year study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). It is directed by Dr. Hyeouk Chris Hahm at the Boston University School of Social Work. The project focuses on values important to Asian Americans: familial relations, health, and community. Through these lenses, the project examines the interrelation of mental, sexual, and physical health, and how culture and familial relations affect personal health practices. Specifically, “Healthy Women, Healthy Communities” will focus on factors including acculturation, family relations, depression, sexual risk behaviors, and gender inequities to determine their relation to the different subsets of personal health and risk behaviors. Since there is very little data currently on the health practices of Asian Americans, and Asian American women in particular, this study will help in the development of specific, culturally-competent programs for future generations of Asian American women in regards to mental, physical, and sexual health.

AsianBoston Media Group: Local Asian Singers w/Original Material!

Hi Everyone!

AsianBoston Media Group is looking to promote our local talented Asian singers/bands (with original material) from New England & New York City through our various media outlets and events!

For example, if we are looking for a certain song that fits a theme for an AsianBoston TV show (ABTV), Restaurant Review segment, AB Radio show (ABR), live fashion show, website, etc, we would use the song in the intro, outro, or background, depending on the situation. In turn, we will credit you and the song/songs accordingly. This could be another avenue that leads you to showcase your talent at other events and venues. We can easily use stock or commercial music, but we want to promote locally with this original plan, and potentially expand nationally and internationally accordingly.

If interested, please contact Angel at angel@asianboston.com. Please respond only if you have original songs or are in the process of creating original material.

Thank you!

Best regards,

Leo Anthony

Tess Gerritsen MD, is a Chinese-American novelist and physician, most famous for her medically astute suspense thrillers.
