Cirque Shanghai Bai Xi!

Cirque Shanghai Bai Xi!

By Joanne M. Choi for AsianBoston Magazine

Thousands of years ago, in the time of the Han dynasty, Chinese acrobatic spectacles were performed for the enjoyment of Chinese emperors. It was called “Bai Xi,” which translates to “100 Amazing Acts.”

Now, you too can experience this display as Cirque Shanghai! Cirque Shanghai Bai Xi is coming to the Lynn Auditorium on January 8, 2012.

There are a total of fourteen acts in this show that include feats of artistry honed from long ago, to modern acts performed by twenty-four Chinese acrobats. Think balancing acts, martial arts, plate spinning, ballet, contortion, and traditional costumes to dazzle the eyes and senses. According to Miao Miao Chen, theatrical director, “Cirque Shanghai Bai Xi show is family friendly. Everything's so real and the audiences will enjoy that direct connection to the performers and will have fun and a lasting memory!"

The performers hail from southern China and have worked on this show for six months prior to bringing the show to the U.S. They have been touring the U.S. for the past year. Miao Miao Chen also shared, “The show theme is the evolution of Chinese acrobatic history from the traditional to the modern. Such as [a dancer performing] pointe ballet while balancing on a guy’s shoulder and head, representing the new China. The audience will remember the incredible acts, the exotic colorful costumes, the Chinese feel with modern beat music.” When pressed, she finally admitted to some favorite acts, “The swing pole act, shoulder ballet act, and straw man. It shows what the human body can do, every pose is like a piece of art. She bends backwards as well [shoulder ballet act]. During the swing pole act, the male performer swings from across the stage, flying from stage left to right and then grabs poles with his legs.”

Seeing the photos of the performers precariously balancing in ways that are hard for me on ground level made me realize how easy they make it look. Sometimes, it is the triumvirate of anticipation, anxiety, and amazement that create a stellar experience!

Purchase tickets online at www.lynnauditorium.com for the 3pm show. Each act is 45 minutes with a 20 minute intermission.

Tickets start at $27 and doors open at 2pm.
